Shalom Dear Brothers and Sisters A Consuming Fire A few weeks back as I watched the fires in California on the news, I was reminded of the Scripture "Our God Is a Consuming Fire" (Deuteronomy 4:24, Hebrews 12:29). In the Tanakh, Moses is giving his final address to the Israelites as they are about to enter in to the promised land. He goes back over the fact that it was because of their disobedience the first time that they did not enter 40 years prior to this. He reminds them, they heard the voice of their God from the fire and they feared Him so much so that they did not even want to hear His voice but rather have Moses speak with the Lord God and they would do what He told them to do. So it was, they were about to enter the land they had already seen what the Lord had done for them this side of the Jordan. He was warning them to walk Holy and righteously and obediently keeping the Commandments, the statutes and judgments that the Lord God had given him and he had taught them to follow. He warned them not to set up idols and to bow down and worship them. Not to make any graven images of anything because the people they were going in to wipe out were doing these things and even sacrificing their children on the altars of these man-made graven images. While I know I have never physically offered my children on a man-made graven altar, I wondered how many times I acted selfishly wasting my time on a TV program instead of bringing them before the throne room of God interceding and praying for them to return to the Lord. Some may say well you are entitled to have some time for yourself. What good will that do me if my children or loved ones do not join me in heaven one day with the Lord should He tarry. As I watched the fire blazing consuming everything in its path I also thought of the lake of fire. It's not a popular pulpit message these days, I don't believe we need to go around telling people that's where they're headed unless they receive salvation. On the other hand if we do not tell them the good news and show it by our lives with love, that is where they are headed. If ever there was a time to intercede it is now. In Hebrews we are called tp live righteously and holy and with a proper fear of God. Yes our God is a consuming fire! He will consume our enemies so we need not fear anything that may try to come against us as we seek to get rid of the idols in our lives allowing the Holy Spirit to convict us so that we can come to repentance. For without repentance there cannot be growth a shifting and a shaking not just in the earth, Hebrews 12:28, but in our lives. So that we are constantly growing and seeking to live a life worthy that will glorify our Father. Remembering He is the author and finisher of our faith, Hebrews 12:2.
