Shalom Dear Brothers and Sisters Solomon's Wisdom Solomon could have asked for anything and the Lord God would have given it to him. In 1 Kings 3:3 it tells us exactly why Solomon asked for a wise and understanding heart. "And Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of his father David...". Clearly David had instilled in Solomon not just the greatness of God but the importance of a relationship with God. I think David not only did this in words but also in actions! So Solomon was not afraid when the Lord appeared to him in a dream but was able to converse with Him. King David had done a good job and left Solomon with good instructions. David took Solomon and kept him close by his side I believe. It doesn't say so in the Scriptures but the other brothers all had homes and were off doing their own things. David didn't even always know what was going on with them he knew that Solomon would one day be the one to take over his position as king over Israel. I think he kept him close by his side and at the end near his death he instructed Solomon to stay in the word! To follow God's Torah as given to Moses to be careful to follow all of the statutes and instructions so that the Lord God would be with him. David knew this from experience this is why he was able to pass these important instructions on to his son Solomon. We can read all through 2 Samuel what a close relationship David had with the Lord God and how he acknowledged Him in all his ways. I think David probably spent hours in his older days sharing with Solomon all the things the Lord God delivered David from. David instilled in Solomon a great love for the Lord, when the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream Solomon's concern was not so much for himself but rather for God's people. For Solomon himself said to the Lord, that He had kept His promises to his father David and that now he was to sit on the throne. Solomon said he was but a child yet David had instilled in him the fact that God was merciful because David had walked before the Lord in truth and uprightness of heart. He could say these things back to the Lord because he had seen it for himself and because David had instilled this in him. Also, that God's people were important to Him! That's why Solomon asked for wisdom to know the difference between good and evil to be able to judge as Solomon called them, "these great people of Yours"! Solomon's request was granted and the Lord God gave him even more than he even asked for because he understood these few basic principles! God reminded Solomon of the words of his father David in the end of the dream, to walk in His ways and keep His Commandments and statutes then He would also lengthen his days. These promises are still true for us today! If we walk in truth and uprightness of heart doing our best to love the Lord our God and our neighbor as ourselves, following his Commandments and statutes we will be a blessing to others and to our God we will show our love for Him by what we do and the things we seek after. If we seek after His ways we will bless Him. After all the Lord has done for me I want to do all I can to bless Him back, I can never repay or even come close to repaying all the Lord God has done for me! All I can do is give thanks with a grateful heart and follow His Commandments walk as uprightly as possible and show as much love to each and everyone of His Creations especially those made in His very own image! This will bless His Heart
