Shalom Dear Brothers and Sisters Lot's Wife In Genesis chapter 19 we find the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. Now we find first of all Abraham interceding because he knows Lot and his family are living in Sodom. Obviously Abraham had not stayed in close contact with Lot. Unfortunately for Lot his life seemed to revolve around himself and what was always best for him. Even when it came to the point where the Angels are warning him to get out and go to the mountains he pleads with them he would rather go to the city nearby. Now I don't mean to sound judgmental but I think there is much to be learned here. First of all Lot's son-in-law's do not go with him because they think he is joking around. Meanwhile the Angels are urging Lot to take his family and get going because they can do nothing until he is gone. The Angels warned them not to look back or stay in the plain least they be destroyed. The city Lot ran to was spared only because of Lot. The Lord stayed His Hand until Lot was inside the city of Zoar then fire and brimstone hail fell down on the plain destroying both cities and all the land. Yet Lot's wife deliberately chose to turn and look behind. We use that saying "curiosity killed the cat". This is a prime example it was her curiosity that destroyed her. It was also her disobedience. As I read that story again I realized how serious this really is. Yes our adversary is out to get us but we too can be our own worst enemy as in the case of Lot's wife. The grace and mercy and patience of God are exceedingly evident in this story but so is His justice. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations of our own making. I know I have been many times. When this happens I immediately cry out to God pleading and begging for mercy! The answer is always the same, yes you are forgiven and I will be with you through the consequences! God loves us greatly but He cannot go against Himself or His Word. He is a good Father and we are His children. He loves us enough to chasten and discipline us when we need it. I love my children very much, when they were young I too had to discipline them. It was hard and difficult but we did it because we love them. There were even times when they found themselves in trouble outside of our home. They had to face the consequences but we still loved them, stood by them, and welcome them back as long as they were willing to obey the rules of the House. So too with us because of the blood of Yeshua the ultimate sacrifice has been made for our sins, that does not mean we can continue to go on sinning, Romans 6:1. We now have the grace to walk in the footsteps of the Master! We need to be obedient children pleasing Our Father in Heaven! It is good to remember where we came from. But the lesson here is not to look back or behind. Our hearts easily will lead us astray, "the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?" Jeremiah 17:9. That is why we need to desperately cling to the Word of God and time spent in it and in the presence of Almighty God. He and He alone will show us things and ways to change. When we are obedient and obey we become pleasing instruments in His Hands! Keeping our eyes straight ahead and focused on the Lord is the message of Lot's wife.
